Creative Birds

Where I ramble my way through life, hopefully leaving bits of beauty along the way…

New site to check out! April 3, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — creativebirds @ 5:03 pm

I’m trolling around the internets today and land on Jennifer McGuire‘s blog. It’s funny, I love blogs, but spending as much time on the computer at work as I do, when I’m home I don’t do a lot of surfing so I don’t jump on many blogs. My most visited sites are Facebook and YouTube, then probably Google. But this weekend I found one thanks to Jennifers site.

It’s called Lily Pad Cards, and just launched on 4/1. I’m really excited by the plans to offer challenges, sketches and other tips/tricks for all of us crafty minded folks. I love seeing how creative others are and think this will be a great chance to see some new things. PLUS, since they are launching they have a great giveaway going one until tomorrow. I think of this as a bit of a game of telephone…to enter they’ve asked for the following to be added to a blog post (and I’m happy to comply!): There’s a new challenge blog in town with articles, swaps, interviews, videos, challenges, great prizes and MORE! Check out Lily Pad Cards! [Link:]

I hope your Sunday is a lovely, crafty one. I can’t wait to sit down at my table and work on something creative, something bright and cheerful. It’s been so gray and drizzly here in Michigan, but so far hasn’t turned to snow. Fingers crossed. Before I head home I need to stop at Michaels for a little drawstring bag (I’m pretty sure I’ll find them in the wedding aisle). My son is about to lose his very first tooth and I need to make sure we are prepared for the Tooth Fairy’s visit. I think the little bag will be the perfect place to keep the tooth safe and great for the fairy to leave some little goodie for him. It’s such a strange feeling…I remember how excited we were when his first tooth came in and now it’s the same tooth that is the first to fall out. Sorry, sentimental mommy moment. 🙂

I also need to post some pictures of the cards I’ve been working on…I haven’t been too idle since my last post, though of course I feel like I never get enough crafting done to satisfy me. 🙂 Darn full time job and other responsibilities! People who get to craft for a living make me so envious!

Hugs and much love to you!

Just my luck… March 22, 2011

If anyone happens to catch my on-again-off-again ramblings on Twitter, you might have seen me whining about my back lately. (Sorry about that!) On Saturday I rolled over in bed as I was starting to wake up, and suddenly had pain shooting down my left leg. Awesome. It got worse over the morning so I decided to take my husbands advise and go to his chiropractor. I’ve put it off for years, but as it got more painful I was looking for anything to fix it. That, and it was a much shorter drive to the chiropractor than our physician.

Well, he checked me out, did a little adjustment and sent me home with herbal muscle relaxers, and strict orders to rest. Well, Saturday and Sunday were spent pretty much in bed…I tried to get out of bed twice on Saturday and got hit with so much pain I was actually dizzy. Yikes. To top it off on Sunday morning I woke up with the most God-awful charlie horses, followed by my leg going numb to my toes. So needless to say it was a lost weekend. Well nt entirely lost…like I mentioned when I started this post, I spent a lot of time getting to know folks on Twitter (and Facebook) courtesy of my trusty iPod.

Monday I went back to the chiropractor and he did some more adjustment, but there was no way I could got to work. I can barely walk. I went back in today for an Electromagnetic Field treatment. It was an odd experience. Not painful, but strange sensations. I also got a bit lightheaded but was fine. Everyone was hoping I would be cured, but unfortunately that hasnt beent he case. I still have a numb leg, and if I’m not careful, I get pain down my leg from my back. Ugh. Back again tomorrow morning, and then I have to go to work. This is one of the worst weeks for this to happen. We have training classes this weekend and we needed this week to finalize the materials. Again, ugh.

With all that, I haven’t been able to create much of anything. I couldn’t really sit up until yesterday so I took advantage of it to make a card for my husband. Its his birthday. 🙂 The kids made some adorable cards for him, and I added one of my own. I found the idea for the layout from a recent card by Kristina Werner (starofmay on YouTube). He wouldn’t be into a lot of stamping and other flourishes, so I let the paper be the focus. I was pretty pleased with how it turned out:

Now to work on the other projects on my list. I’m finally feeling well enough to work on some of the others I need to do. Slowly.

So a very happy birthday to my darling husband, kisses to my children, hopes for my back to feel better and best wishes to you. 🙂

Happy St. Patty’s Day! March 17, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — creativebirds @ 1:25 pm

I hope you are having a lovely “top o’ the day” kind of day today! It’s supposed to be around 60 degrees today…can you believe it? It has felt as though winter has had us in his clutches forever! I took a bit of a walk outside this morning, watching a light breeze rustle those brown crispy leaves that were too stubborn to fall from the trees last fall, listening to the sparrows chirp as they swoop around looking for nesting material…all around a good time.

So how am I spending St. Patty’s Day? I am the responsible one who is not skipping work to drink green beer (ick!) but we are having some fun and made some green popcorn. You may say “ick” too, but honestly it tastes just like regular popcorn. Trust me on this one…I am a very willing taste tester when it comes to popcorn! lol

Here’s a pic:

Later today I think we’ll make shamrock shaped cookies…but no, I won’t be making corned beef and cabbage. I can’t claim even an ounce of Irish blood and cabbage is one of those things I just can’t make myself eat. So we’ll celebrate in other ways that the kids will enjoy. Although just wearing green was enough for my son…he was worried about the cats though. “They don’t have any green on, can you make them a green sweater Mommy?” lol, well, I’m good, but at 8am, not so much. Plus, he doesn’t understand that the cats would go ballistic if I dared put some kind of shirt on them. 🙂

I hope that your own St. Patty’s day festivites are merry!

Where, oh where, has Melanie gone??? March 14, 2011

Sorry that I have been totally MIA for the past 2 months. Well, not totally. I’ve been posting on YouTube, watching UStream, Tweeting occasionally. But not blogging. A few reasons for that. 1. I’ve been thinking about switching blogs…again. I’ve been playing with a new template on blogger because I’d like the ability to sell through my blog, and so many folks who are successful with that do so with a Blogger account. Not so say that you can’t do that with WordPress, but I am so un-techy and have little time to learn that I want to find a simple way to place a “Buy now” button. So I’m checking out my options. 2. I’ve come the conclusion that I generally suck at blogging. Not that I think I completely suck at writing; when I’m in the right mood I can crank out a few paragraphs that even include a few witty comments with few spelling errors. But again, I beg forgiveness that Time takes me hostage. I have 2 full time jobs…the first one requires that I get dressed for and drive to, and the other requires that I dress 2 small children and drive for. That’s the one where brushing my hair & wearing matching clothes is completely optional. My first job also dedicates lots of computer time, so when I get home and have some time to sit at the computer often my brain is just a tad fried and coherent sentences are a struggle.

But, I promise to try to be better about it. And who knows if anyone is actually reading this, if not, well then no harm done. lol  But I’ve also been thinking that if I don’t just focus on crafty topics, perhaps I’ll set aside a few minutes for a quick post about how my daughter ate pudding last night, and when she turned to look at me to ask for more, she had so much on her face that she practically got a second helping. Or how my son had a blast at a friends swim party yesterday and how we have to sign him up for lessons before he permanently swims like a Labrador puppy. You know, the other stuff in life. Because it all influences when and how I create.

Wow, I’m monologuing. Sorry about that, just had to get it out! lol So I have been creating, working a lot in my art journals, shoveling lots of snow, not sleeping enough…the usual. I did complete Marion Smiths challenge (all of the videos are on my YouTube Channel), which was great. I got lots of projects done that were sitting around. Now of course I have lots of other projects that need to be completed, which just keeps things fun.

The other thing I’m working on, related to the comment about thinking about setting up a new blog is creating some mini album kits. If anyone is reading this out there, what do you think? I wonder if anyone would be interested? It would be fun for me to put them together, I guess I just worry that there are so many kits out there, how could mine be different? So I’m researching and will figure this out. Stay tuned!

And lastly, I do have something to share…it’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Lawn Fawn stamps. If you haven’t heard of this new company (they just celebrated their 1 year anniversary, congrats!) you should definitely check them out. I’ve used their stamps in a variety of projects and just keep coming back to them. Plus they are made in the USA, BIG FAN of that. Before I sound like a billboard ad (hee hee) I wanted to share their link so you can check out their blog. They have an amazing design team (and don’t think I haven’t wished to be part of that creative team!) and the samples posted in the current release posts will just blow you away. I already have a long wish list of stamps and this release just added a few more! (Now if my house could hold off on major repairs for a bit so I can indulge in a couple of sets, I would be most grateful!). Happy peeking!

Ok, I’ll close for now. I’ll be back sooner than later, I promise. BTW, I saw a flock of robins the other day…yes,  a flock of about 15-20 robins. Oddest thing, but gave me hope that spring may finally be making it’s way here! Hope you are seeing some signs of spring also!

Weekly roundup January 11, 2011

So I am just over a week into my January challenge. It’s been interesting, to say the least. 🙂 I’m participating in Marion Smith’s 31 project challenge over at YouTube, and posting video daily has been quite a challenge in itself. I am currently a day behind but plugging along. On Saturday I came down with the flu, which has knocked the wind right out of me. I went to bed on Saturday night and couldn’t get out of bed for anything more than a sip of water or trip to the bathroom for 17 hours. Every muscle and joint in my body just hurt, and even now on Tuesday I still hurt in my neck, shoulders and head. But getting back on my feet, thankfully. On top of all that, my 3 year old daughter got a hold of a pair of scissors and got crafty with her hair. Chopped it off to her earlobes on both sides. So she is now sporting a new little pageboy bob with no hope of being able to pull it back for the ballet class she just started. Ah well, it could be worse…

We have some beautiful snow falling outside, and I’m hearing that we could get up to 6 inches before it’s done. No one has officially spoken about a Snow Day tomorrow, but I know it’s already in the minds of a few people in my house. 🙂

Ok, so on with the projects. Rather than a separate post for each card, I am just going to post them all here. Here we go!

This is myu first Toilet Paper mini album. The structure is surprisingly simple to make…just take a few empty rolls of TP (or a paper towl tube and cut it to size, which gives you two), flatten them with a brayer or under some heavy books and you are ready to go! I covered them with Prima paper and then created tags to slide inside the flattened rolls. I used a Stampin Up tab punch so they call be pulled out easily. Then it was time to decorate! Some borber punches, tiny mats, flowers and bling later, voila! I plan to use this for pictures of my daughter…but one reason why I haven’t jumped fully onto the mini album wagon is that I don’t have a photo printer and need to find a good source to print out my pictures in a small wallet size format. Any suggestions, blogosphere?

Here’s the next:

Isn’t she a cutie??? I love Greeting Farm stamps, and this Flirty Anya is one of my favs. I haven’t used my Copics in a while so thought it was about time. Santa filled my stocking with a few new colors for Christmas (hee hee) and I finally sat down to use them. The weather was pretty gray and dismal this day so some bright blues and yellows were the perfect remedy. I also used a newly purchased Baroque die from the Tim Holtz collection, and I love it! I do need to used some foam in the center next time though – it was a pain to get the die out. The background was also run through the Big Shot using a Polka Dot impressions folder from Stampin Up, which also sat in my stash unused until now. I used some yellow ink rubbed right over the impression to add a bit more color. The sentiment stamp came from the dollar bins at Michaels (love those bins!). All in all, I thought it turned out rather cute.

Next, a little paper piecing:

All of the images are from Lawn Fawn. I have just fallen in love with Kelly Marie’s stamps and if you haven’t tried them out, you should soon! They have a very whimsical style which are great on any number of projects and you can easily pull images from different sets and they all still work together. Here I’m using Critters in the Burbs and Fly Free. I stamped the images onto paper from a retired 6×6 DSP stack from Stampin Up called Welcome Neighbor and then “fussy cut” them out before layering them. A little faux stitching and it’s good to go!

Then we move on to the most recent:

I made this card on Sunday when I finally rolled out of bed. All I can say is thank goodness for Nyquil! 🙂 This is a get well card, probably heading to the next person at work who comes down with this bug. The image is from House Mouse, which I was excited to find out that Hobby Lobby carries (a few anyway). We didn’t have Hobby Lobby in my area until pretty recently so it was nice to see some new items from the usual selection at Michaels and Joanns. There is also a Archivers about 30 minutes away, which I haven’t been to yet, but really need to check out eventually. 🙂

Again I colored with Copics and mounted it on some pale yellow and dark gray cardstock from Stampin Up. The sentiment is from a new stamp set I just received from Scrappy Moms called Sweet Somethings. It has some really cute sayings and I’m looking forward to using it for some future projects.

Ok, that’s it…besides cleaning my craft desk (a never-ending task) and clearing out email and updating here. I have to say, this first week has been pretty intense in terms of time management, but I’m having a lot of fun. Keeping videos short and more of a recap of a project rather than a tutorial seems to be the way to go for now, since it’s easier to upload those videos without major editing. So there may be a regular tutorial here and there, but generally it will be just a recap of the days project for now. I haven’t done any scrapbooking yet, which I am desperately behind on, but hopefully I can order some pictures this weekend and finally get started on a few pages.

Ok, I’m off to finish the next project and then probably do a little shoveling with the family. Good times!

Project for 1/2/11 January 2, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — creativebirds @ 7:59 pm

Today I worked on another card. This one is more generic, using a Hero Arts stamp that I really love. The paper came from one of the packs I showed in yesterdays video on YouTube.

The nice thing about using double sided paper, is that it often comes with a pattern on one side and a solid color on the reverse. Anyway, hope you enjoy!

Here is the video on how I put this card together.

Anyway, have a wonderful day and talk to you tomorrow!

Happy New Year!

Filed under: Uncategorized — creativebirds @ 5:52 pm

Ok, I know, it’s technically January 2nd. Yesterday there was no way to get to the computer so I had to wait till today. My husband kicked off the new year by inviting his friends to a card game, which included a huge card table in the family room. Card games mean moving furniture and more testosterone than I can handle in an enclosed space, so I opted to hide in my room, working on a few things and enjoying a bit of peace. 🙂

So I made a quick, one layer birthday card. Take a look:

White note card (Recollections), Scallop square punch (Stampin Up), Stamps (Hampton Art), Ink (Momento Tuxedo Black), Markers (Copic), Glitter (Stickles), black pen

Nothing too fancy, but still had some fun with it. 🙂 I have a few birthdays coming up that I need to make cards for. And one of my goals this year is to be more on top of sending cards to friends and family. I always have the best intentions, but somehow the days escape me and suddenly the birthday is on me and I’m scrambling to get a card finished and in the mail.

Anyway, Happy New Year, and happy crafting!
